Launch of the Report « Colombia : The Legal Profession Still Under Attack »

On the evening of July 6 2011 launch events were held in both Canada (Ottawa) and Colombia (Bogota) to celebrate the publication of the report Colombia: the Legal Profession Still Under Attack, Report of the Second International Lawyers’ Delegation to Colombia.

At Ottawa City Hall LWBC Executive Director Pascal Paradis, Program Officer Emily Dwyer and Volunteer Lawyer and Delegation Member Lise Rivet presented the primary findings and conclusions of the Report.

In Bogota, LWBC Volunteer Lawyer and Delegation Member Marie-Pierre Grenier joined ACADEUM president Edwin Rubio to present the conclusions of the Report. Delegates from the United Kingdom also participated via videoconference.

In August of 2007 twelve Canadian Lawyers joined the delegation totalling fifty-seven jurists from 15 countries in a 7 day international legal observation mission to Colombia. During this period, delegates heard accounts from witnesses in all regions visited of serious challenges to the ability of lawyers and other legal professionals to exercise their professional duties safely (including examples of assassinations and threats, stigmatization and criminalization, and the almost total impunity that existed for such attacks). The delegation also concluded that the Colombian state has an important role to play in improving this situation and that monitoring by the international community remains crucial. The Report outlines the findings and conclusions of the delegation, the recommendations made to the Colombian authorities, and the commitments of the international community to continue to monitor the situation in Colombia.
